Fodor's Expert Review Creatif Hotel Elephant
Lämmerstr. 6, Munich, Bavaria, 80335, Germany, Munich, Germany See on Map
Tucked away on a quiet street near the train station, this hotel appeals to a wide range of travelers, from businesspeople to tourists on a budget. The recently renovated rooms are simple, but clean and comfortable enough. A bright color scheme in the reception and breakfast room creates a cheery atmosphere, and the breakfast itself is surprisingly good.
The hotel provides tea and coffee downstairs all day for free - a cute touch for a budget property.
Rooms are not large, and the decor and facilities are basic, but the bright touches--like colorful spotty designs on one wall--give the hotel a pleasant feel.
YOU SHOULD KNOW There is no air-conditioning, which can be a problem in the warmer months, particularly as there is street noise. Ask for a quiet room.
Bathrooms are clean but also not overly large, and far from luxurious (there are no amenities). Some have bathtubs, but all have showers.
The bright, friendly lobby is welcoming if, again, quite basic. But you get what you pay for.
The hotel's restaurant, Deutsches Weingold, is about ten minutes away, with a pleasant Liberty-style interior and Bavarian and Mediterranean food. It's right next to the Deutsches Theater. Breakfast is served on-site at the hotel, though.
The hotel is right by the main station, which is helpful for the airport, sightseeing, and onward travel. It's also walking distance from many of the main sights.
Sample Bavarian fare in the traditional cellar restaurant, Ratzkeller Munich (8-minute S-bahn, 20-minute walk). Or closer to home, Rustico (3-minute walk) is a decent modern Italian place.
Keep the Munich feel going with a trip to legendary brew pub and beer garden, Augustiner Keller (8-minute walk). Or try welcoming local rock pub, Bar Sehnsucht (10-minute by train, or 25-minute walk).
WHY WE LIKE IT
Cheap and cheerful is a sentence that may as well have been written for Creatif Hotel Elephant (and to be honest it would be a more appropriate name than its current slightly odd - although admittedly memorable - moniker). A good central location and clean rooms, plus a good breakfast, push it onto our list - plus the fantastic prices.
