Fodor's Review

Set in the middle of the Old Town, this tavern has been serving beer inside an ancient half-timber house since 1405. The fare, atmosphere, and patrons are the definition of traditional Bamberg. Be sure to try the Bamberger Zwiebel, a local onion stuffed with pork, or come on Sunday for a roast dinner. But the real reason to come here is to try the Aecht Schenkerla Rauchbier, a beer brewed with smoked malt. This Rauchbier (smoked beer) is served from huge wooden barrels and tastes like liquid ham—it's an acquired taste, but worth sampling; locals agree that if you can choke down the first one, you'll be a fan for life.
