Hide away in the Caucasus mountains of Stepantsminda, the capital of Kazbegi, what was once a getaway for government officials in Soviet times. Built in the '60s and also formerly a Soviet sports base, it’s a toss-up whether this unparalleled ski lodge (though it’s not technically accessible by ski lift—yet) is all about its surroundings or the stunning property itself. But spend an evening on the sprawling terrace with a glass of wine and a blanket, or your own private balcony with panoramic views of the mountain range and the sound of sheep bleating in the distance before you decide. You can also take your chances in the casino on the ground floor. Part of the Design Hotels group, Rooms also has properties in Tbilisi.

All 155 rooms come with a view, whether its of Mount Kazbek and the Gergeti Trinity church, or the lush forest. Wooden platform beds are fitting for this glam-cabin setting; a desk and oversized reading chair are conducive to lengthy stays. Open the french doors to your own small balcony, spacious enough for two to look out onto the rural paradise.

Natural timber and rainfall showers complement the rustic aesthetic.

The open-concept lobby built in all natural timber is striking upon entry thanks to floor to ceiling windows that look onto the mountain range.

The gym on the hotel’s lower level has a 30-foot heated pool, and the upper Caucasus surrounds, creating a dramatic experience.

Indulge in the hotel's sauna, massages, and aromatherapy sessions.

The workout room has a few cardio machines, a weighted hula hoop and free weights, plus yoga mats so you can stretch while looking out of pleasant floor-to-ceiling windows.

Dine on site with locally- inspired and sourced Georgian cuisine while seated in the open dining space, all connected to the lobby. A fireplace as ambiance to this slick rustic ski lodge.

Order hand-rolled cigars at the full bar; take your drinks onto the terrace and sip craft cocktails before astounding views. On cold nights, curl up with a complimentary fleece blanket.

Getting Around

Set in a remote location in the mountains, the hotel is accessible by car, and is a destination in itself. They do offer off-road tours up to the 14th century Gergeti monastery, inhabited by five monks, which doubles as a free rehabilitation center.

A red bus parked at the bottom of the mountain in the small town Stepantsminda, Awtobus (2-minute drive) serves coffee and dessert. Restaurant Stepantsminda (4-minute drive) serves traditional Georgian food al fresco.

Sing karaoke at Cozy Corner (4-minute drive) which has indoor dining, hookah, plus a large outdoor space on the grass for drinking and eating.

An upscale yet comfortable property in a completely remote setting, Rooms Kazbegi will have you forget where exactly on earth you are. It's a great destination year-round: cozy up by the fireplace in the winter, or relax on the terrace in the summer. One of the very few hotels in the Black Sea town, you can also go through the hotel to book adventures like helicopter rides, or off-road trips up to the 14th century Gergeti monastery.
