Fodor's Expert Review Aqueduct
Looming at the back of the château garden and extending through the village almost from the train station to highway D6 are the unlikely ivy-covered arches of a ruined aqueduct, one of the Sun King's most outrageous projects. The original scheme aimed to provide the ornamental lakes and fountains in the gardens of Versailles, some 50 km (31 miles) away, with water from the River Eure. In 1684, 30,000 men were signed up to construct a three-tier, 5-km (3-mile) aqueduct as part of the project. Many died in the process, and construction was called off in 1689.
