Fodor's Expert Review Village des Bories
Just outside Gordes, on a lane heading north from D2, you'll see signs leading to this village. The bizarre and fascinating little stone hovels called bories are found throughout this region of Provence, and here they are concentrated some 20 strong in an ancient community. Their origins are provocatively vague: built as shepherds' shelters with tight-fitting, mortarless stone in a hivelike form, they may date to the Celts, the Ligurians, even the Iron Age—and were inhabited or used for sheep through the 18th century. A photo exhibition shows other structures, similar to bories, in countries around the world.
