Fodor's Expert Review Villa Méditerranée
Forming a striking black-white contrast with its neighbor, MuCEM, the resolutely modernist Villa Méditerranée, designed by Stefano Boeri, suspends a monumental 130-foot cantilevered overhang above a large azure reflecting pool. Part of a far-reaching plan to revitalize the J4 esplanade and the old and new ports, both buildings were financed with funds awarded with the 2013 Capital of Culture designation. The Villa's mission is to encourage cultural exchange through a constantly revolving series of performances, concerts, exhibitions, lectures, and other events that take the Mediterranean as their theme. Exhibitions explore issues like mobility in the Mediterranean via mass tourism, trade mobility, and legal and illegal immigration. Consult the online calendar for a detailed schedule of events.
