Fodor's Expert Review Domaine des Andéols

Rte. de Roussillon Les Andéols, St-Saturnin-lès-Apt, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, 84490, France Fodor's Choice

In a complete departure from traditional Provençal chic, this collection of cubic houses immerses guests in a contemporary environment—each of 11 individually decorated houses contain works by top designers and artists, private terraces, and some even have small private pools. Wildest is the Maison du Voyageur with its stuffed tiger, zebra skin, and antler sofa, while the Maison des Lointains has a barbed-wire chandelier, suggestive black-and-white photos, and a stone bath in each room. Perfect for two, the stunning Nature Suites offer total privacy with your own private yard, sun deck, and state-of-the-art amenities, including a steam room or sauna. You can sip an aperitif accompanied by delicious house snacks on your own terrace before venturing over to the gastronomic restaurant, the 7th Element, where the brilliant young chef Julien Bontus concocts a stellar set menu that changes daily. At the bistro, chef Maurice Alexis, a veteran of Paris's Elysée Palace (he's cooked for three French presidents as well as the President of Gabon) uses the bounty of the hotel's extensive gardens to create gourmet-rustic dishes expressive of Provence. From the swimming pool and the dramatic stepped garden patios, admire dramatic views of the countryside; there is also an indoor pool should fierce winds strike. Be sure to check the website for significant last-minute deals, especially in the off season.
