Fodor's Expert Review La Maison sur la Sorgue

6 rue Rose Goudard, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, 84800, France Fodor's Choice

This 17th-century home wins guests over as soon as they walk in the door, thanks to its composed elegance and authentic style rarely found in a hotel setting—innkeepers Frédéric and Marie-Claude did their architectural homework before they renovated. Each of the four unique rooms, tasteful in tones and modern fixtures, is spacious and displays one of its original walls. Each makes its own mark, whether with a courtyard terrace, a view of the Virgin Mary statue from the facing church, or even a sunset surprise. Obliging hosts, books everywhere, a disappearing pool, and a shop next door to purchase some last-minute antique indulgences makes a return visit inevitable.

PROS

  • all-out treatment plus amenities (shampoos and soaps)
  • courtyard breakfast includes morning surprises beyond basic croissant and jam fare
  • true elegance

CONS

  • can be hard to find, especially when driving through Sunday crowds
  • some handheld showers
  • expensive (but worth it)
