Fodor's Expert Review Hostellerie La Tour d'Auxois
Sq. Alexandre Dumaine, Saulieu, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, 21210, France
The retro, zinc-topped bar, stone floors, and log fire strike a perfect balance with the modern-day comforts of this handsome, family-run hotel that was once a convent. The unpretentious rooms are notable for their neutral palette and rustic touches; some have exposed beams, and the best come with a view of the garden, pool, and the Tour d'Auxois. Bathrooms are compact, but up to scratch. An on-site restaurant serves tasty dishes with a contemporary twist; if you want to splurge, though, you can feast on Patrick Bertron's cuisine across the road at Relais Bernard Loiseau.
PROS
- attractive budget option
- the pool is a welcome amenity
- suites have rustic charm
CONS
- rooms facing the busy road can be noisy
- decor looks a bit worn
- some rooms are small
