Fodor's Review

This cozy restaurant in an 18th-century inn on the outskirts of an unspoiled country village is traditional but not fussy, with exposed stone walls, open fireplaces, original oak beams, and windows that look out to panoramic views of the Dales. The same satisfaction is in the food, which incorporates local ingredients whenever possible. Main courses include grilled cod with a crab, lime, and coconut crust and Gressingham duck breast in a Madeira sauce. A bar menu serves traditional pub grub like fish cakes or local sausage with mash. The craft beer selection is outstanding. Dinner is served between 6:30 and 8:45. The inn's six rooms (£70/night) are simple but comfortable. (Just to confuse things, there's a Shoulder of Mutton pub in Middleton Tyas, also outside Richmond, that serves highly regarded pub food.)
