Fodor's Expert Review Gravetye Manor

Off B2110, East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19 4LJ, England

This Elizabethan stone mansion, built in 1598, stands on a hilltop site on 1,000 acres of grounds landscaped by William Robinson (1838–1935), a noted gardener who lived here and created fine naturalistic gardens. Restored with oak paneling and ornamental plaster ceilings, it represents the epitome of the luxurious traditional country-house hotel; guest rooms are spacious and decorated with floral prints. Gravetye is known in these parts for its excellent food (particularly its seafood) and no doubt this will continue when a new hotel restaurant with a lovely view of the gardens opens before 2019. Check the website for excellent deals, ranging from discount weekend stays to full-dinner bed-and-breakfast packages.
