Fodor's Expert Review Jarrow Hall

Newcastle upon Tyne Family

Editor's Note: This location is reported to be under new ownership and therefore this review may contain inaccuracies.

This site holds substantial monastic ruins, the church of St. Paul, Jarrow Hall House, and Bede Museum, a small museum reflecting the long tradition of religion and learning that began here in AD 681, when the first Saxon church was established on the site. The Venerable Bede (672–735), deemed to be England's earliest historian, moved into the monastery as a child and remained until his death. The 11-acre Anglo-Saxon Farm and Village, reconstructed by modern historians using traditional methods, provides a sense of early medieval life, and has rare breeds of pigs and cattle. There's also a shop and the Hive Coffee Company café.
