Fodor's Expert Review Victoria Inn

86 Hallgarth St., Durham, Durham, DH1 3AS, England

An authentically Victorian air pervades at this cozy pub near Durham Cathedral that also serves as a B&B. The decor in the six bedrooms hovers somewhere between doll's house and grandmother's house—one has pink flock wallpaper with flowery bedspreads and candy-striped cushions, while another has far more subdued shades of burnt sienna and a four-poster bed—but the effect of all the chintz is more charming than twee. The owners are friendly and helpful. The sense of tradition continues into the pub itself, which serves an outstanding range of local beer.
