Fodor's Expert Review Drunken Duck Inn

Off B5286, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 ONG, England Fodor's Choice

After four centuries, this friendly old coaching inn remains an outstanding place for both food and lodging. Bedrooms—bright, chic, and exceptionally comfortable—make good use of natural materials, such as local Herdwick wool and slate, and have wonderful views of the Langdale Pikes. Newer rooms have roll-top tubs and underfloor heating. The price includes afternoon tea and breakfast. Slip into the cozy bar with oak settles and order a tasty real ale from the Duck's Barngates Brewery. There's an open fire, and hops hang over the bar. The dining space has an open kitchen, dark-wood furniture, and hunting prints. Beef cheek with artichoke, coley with pancetta, and smoked salmon teriyaki are typical of the top-notch Modern British fare using locally sourced ingredients; lunch is less formal. The inn is 2½ miles from Hawkshead.
