The 18th-century butchers’ market, the Shambles, now holds this museum, which documents local history, trades, and crafts with exhibits on rope making and clay-pipe making. Craftspeople working in wood, ceramics, stained glass, and textiles occupy the nearby workshops. Check out the 250-year-old brass foundry, which was open for business until the 1960s; the Victorian town jail cells; and the claustrophobic World War II air-raid shelter.
