Fodor's Review

Splendidly revived old English gastronomy dishes executed with ultramodern precision is the schtick here at chef Ashley Palmer-Watts's wildly popular eatery at the Mandarin Oriental. As you take in views of Hyde Park, slice into options like the Meat Fruit appetizer (circa 1500), a ball of ultrasmooth chicken liver parfait in a mandarin jelly. You can also try a plate of the Rice and Flesh (circa 1390), a much-more-appetizing-than-it-sounds dish of yellow saffron rice with calves' tails. There are antique jelly molds on the walls and an open-fire spit (complete with pulley system) churns out delights like roast pineapple Tipsy cake (circa 1810), an homage to English spit-roasting from centuries past.
