The Capital Hotel

22–24 Basil St., London, SW3 1AT, England

A very English luxury hotel experience, the Capital stays true to its time-honoured traditions of classic style and personal service. Perfect for the Downton Abbey enthusiast, or guests who simply love the formality of staff buzzing around them with their every need taken care of. Located in the center of Knightsbridge, the hotel also boasts one of London’s finest fish restaurants, Outlaw’s.

Wander the mazy surrounding streets and you'll stumble on the quaint hidden mews and small squares synonymous with the neighborhood.

Rooms are decorated in the Capital’s signature English style of chintzy fabrics, heavy patterned curtains and plenty of antique furniture and artwork. There are family apartments and two-bedroom suites for guests with children.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The old-fashioned décor is a strong look but might not be one that everybody can get on board with should you prefer a more contemporary room.

While not individually decorated like the rooms, bathrooms adopt a more contemporary style. Clean and neutral, they feature bathtub showers and Temple Spa bath products.

Behind the fairly restrained brick façade, the lobby at the Capital is equally low key, however, a simple check-in desk is warmed by the presence of a large open fire.

The restaurant space itself may be every inch the traditional room you’d expect at the Capital—complete with some impressive cascading curtain pelmets that surround it—but chef Nathan Outlaw’s eponymous restaurant is a hot ticket for fans of super fresh seafood.

Getting Around

Close to Knightsbridge Underground Station, the West End is a 10-minute Tube ride away. Highlights of the wealthy Knightsbridge neighborhood include its array of high-end shops and department stores, restaurants and bars. Guests should wander down Brompton Road where they’ll discover the South Kensington Museum Quarter is just 12 minutes away.

An award-winning gastro pub, the Admiral Codrington (12-minute walk) is the choice of well-heeled locals when they want simple pub classics—albeit done very well—in an informal environment. A short walk from the hotel, you’ll find a warm welcome and an authentic Italian trattoria experience at Scalini (7-minute walk).

Drink champagne at the Fifth Floor Bar (3-minute walk) at Harvey Nichols after some retail therapy—make sure to get a window seat. At 5pm, head to the Mandarin Bar (4-minute walk) at the nearby Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park hotel, where you’ll join a chic clientele present to enjoy the cocktails and the people watching.

Proud to stick to its traditional style, the Capital is a comfortable, warm boutique hotel experience that inspires repeat visits. Conveniently located in the midst of the Knightsbridge action, it’s a great base if you’re in town to enjoy the finer things London has to offer.
