Fodor's Expert Review Space Apart Hotel

32–37 Kensington Gardens Sq., London, W2 4BQ, England See on Map

Who needs room service, restaurants and a concierge? Those who can do without hotel amenities will find the studio apartments at Space Apart Hotel offer a refreshingly informal approach to vacation rentals. Great for families with a young child, or couples on a budget. While Bayswater is hardly the most illustrious of London neighborhoods, its close proximity to Hyde Park, Paddington and Notting Hill makes it an attractive location given the price.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Bayswater isn’t the most exciting place, so make the short walk to Notting Hill for a more vibrant neighborhood with some genuine London tourist spots like Portobello Market.

Totally self-contained, the studios at Space Apart Hotel are ideal for saving money on expensive meals out. All come with well-equipped kitchens with hob capabilities that slot seamlessly into the bright, modern spaces. While not huge, the premium studios do give a little more room.

Rooms are small with the kitchen units barely an arm’s length from the bed in some rooms so if you have any student bedsit phobias you’d rather not revisit, the studios here may be a little too cozy.

Private bathrooms have showers and plenty of storage space. Clean and contemporary they could slot into any self-respecting boutique hotel.

Public areas are stylish enough to convince you that this isn’t too foreign an experience to staying in a regular hotel. A roof terrace even provides a space to enjoy the views over the rooftops.

Getting Around

Bayswater Underground Station is a 6-minute walk from the hotel from where the Circle and District Lines run East and West in and out of Central London. The journey to the sights of the West End is 20 minutes by Tube and a similar time by taxi. Alternatively, explore on foot, heading towards Notting Hill where you’ll find a neighborhood that’s equal parts hip and well-heeled. Full of pubs, boutiques and restaurants, it’s a bona fide London tourist destination.

If rum and jerk chicken take your fancy, Cottons (17-minute walk) is a fun Caribbean restaurant in the heart of Notting Hill. A little closer to home, All Star Lanes (3-minute walk) has a lively restaurant that serves hot dogs, burgers and grilled meats with bowling and karaoke rooms on the side. Thoroughly recommended for all ages.

Part Polynesian tiki bar, part basement lounge, Trailer Happiness (14-minute walk) is a lot of fun. Great drinks and even better music. Part traditional pub, part contemporary speakeasy, you get the best of two worlds at Mitre (14-minute walk). Award-winning beer on the ground floor and cocktails in the basement make it worth the short walk from Space Apart Hotel.

Located on the right side of Bayswater closer to Notting Hill, a short walk and you’re exploring the Portobello Market and independent boutiques. As a bargain hotel, it works on every level. Forget the lack of amenities and what you have is the convenience of a self-contained studio managed to a high level, which makes it great value for money.
