Fodor's Expert Review Qbic London City

42 Adler St., London, E1 1EE, England See on Map

A zany hotel for those who don’t want their hotel decor to take itself too seriously, Qbic London City is all art, style and location. Close to Brick Lane, Spitalfields and Shoreditch, the hip, budget-minded property makes for a great base to explore East London.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The Smart Rooms may be more affordable but you’ll have to put up with the lack of a window.

Big bold colors, local artwork and industrial design are the features of the wacky rooms here that are unlike anything you’ll be used to. While reasonably simple, all have flat screen TVs conveniently mounted at the end of the beds.

Bathrooms come straight out of a design catalogue with their bright displays of color, contemporary fixtures and quirky bath products.

The rainforest showers are particularly noteworthy given the reasonable price of rooms.

Merging with the ground floor bar and restaurant, the lobby is on song with the rest of the hotel so expect a creative space that errs on the side of trendy.

A joint bar and kitchen serves as a one-stop shop for drinking, dining and general merriment. Thanks to its location so close to Brick Lane, it attracts a broad clientele who lend the space a creative communal atmosphere that will appeal to a young crowd who like to mingle. Pizza, burgers, cold press coffee and cocktails are all on the menu.

Getting Around

A bustling, cosmopolitan neighborhood, Whitechapel is a great place to base yourself to explore the best of East London. Brick Lane, Spitalfields Market and Shoreditch High Street are close, while the contemporary Whitechapel Gallery is a few doors down. Saturday and Sunday Brick Lane Markets are a great spot to lose yourself down a rabbit hole of food, drink, and vintage. Whitechapel and Aldgate East Underground stations offer quick links to Central London via the District Line.

Hands-down one of our favorite places to eat in East London, Tayyabs (5-minute walk) is a Pakistani grill that’s well worth the wait times on busy evenings. So close to Brick Lane, it would be sacrilege not to get a curry. The famous street is literally crammed with them and spotting a winner from the assorted shopfronts is a tough prospect. Follow our lead and head to Sheba (9-minute walk).

Make the short walk up Brick Lane to the Cocktail Trading Co. (15-minute walk) for crazy good cocktails served in all manner of original drinking vessels. If you want a great example of a classic East London boozer untouched by the hands of time, go drink at the amazingly trad The Pride of Spitalfields (7-minute walk).

Cool as a cucumber, Qbic London City is quirky in all the right ways. The original rooms are something to write home about—do people still do that?—the location is ideal for exploring and if you want to stay close, there’s a happening hangout space on the ground floor. A perfect choice for curious creatives who like to be holed up with similar sorts.
