Fodor's Expert Review Premier Travel Inn Southwark (Borough Market)

34 Park St., London, SE1 9EF, England, London, England See on Map

Likely offering the hottest location of any outpost of this nationwide chain of bed and breakfasts, the Premier Travel Inn Southwark is an attractive budget option in the heart of one of London’s principal foodie destinations. Clean, comfortable, and oh so purple, the universal Premier Inn interiors are elevated just knowing you’re a stone’s throw from Borough Market and the River Thames.

room

At a property where the emphasis is placed on getting a good night’s sleep, the beds are indeed comfortable. As for the rest of the room, the brand’s slick, basic interiors are more than enough if you’re after a simple room — just make sure you can tolerate purple.

YOU SHOULD KNOW It may claim to be ‘Premier’ but this is essentially a mass appeal bed and breakfast and while rooms are budget, guests certainly pay a premium here thanks to the location.

bathroom

Dual bathtub/showers fill most of the compact bathrooms. Decorated in reassuringly sterile white, the rooms are spotless.

lobby

No lobby to speak of, just a welcome check-in desk ready and waiting to whisk you to your room — so you can freshen up and go straight back out into the bustle of Borough.

dining

An extra surcharge is added to the room if you want breakfast but with plenty of appealing places nearby we’d recommend eating out. The on-site restaurant is open in the evenings and serves classic pub food, but again, we’d explore the gourmet foodie area for more exciting mealtimes.

While Borough market gets the plaudits, nearby Bermondsey Street has plenty of bars and restaurants worth exploring.

LOCATION

Getting Around

With the enviable location close to the river, Tate Modern and Borough Market, you could simply fill your days walking up and down the South Bank and find plenty to occupy your time. Otherwise, London Bridge Station is a 10-minute walk and provides great national and city connections, or Borough Station connects you to the Northern Line and the Tube network. A busy tourist area, taxis are everywhere and it’s a short drive to East London, Clerkenwell or Farringdon.

Restaurants

London’s biggest food market is one of the places to eat in the city, so head there for Bread Ahead doughnuts and tartiflette — but maybe not in that order. Now a small chain, the original Brindisa (4-minute walk) is still the place to go for authentic Spanish tapas. For meat, Hawksmoor Borough (3-minute walk) serves fine steaks in a luxurious, contemporary steak house environment. Make sure to leave the hotel for breakfast and head for Maria’s Market Café (4-minute walk) where you’ll find a mean full English at this traditional greasy spoon.

Bars

If you like your beer glasses extra-large then head to the subterranean German beer hall Katzenjammers (5-minute walk). If you prefer a beer glass with a stem, head to the Rake (3-minute walk) and sample your way through this tiny pub’s huge selection of artisan ales.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Set in a tourist wonderland with the gourmet food of Borough Market, the culture of Tate Modern and the history of Shakespeare’s Globe right on the doorstep, the location is almost all that matters for the Premier Travel Inn Southwark. Fortunately, the beds are great and the rooms are solid, which makes this a great pick if you want to spend your trip in and around the South Bank.
