London Marriott Kensington

147 Cromwell Rd., London, SW5 0TH, England

Toby Orton

A smart outpost of the international chain, the London Marriott County Hall is a property blessed with one of the best locations in London if sights and landmarks are your thing. Housed within the dramatic old County Hall building and poised on the edge of the river, views from rooms take in the London Eye and Houses of Parliament.

room

Elegant, identical rooms bear more than a touch of class with their white panelled walls, sharp soft furnishings and quirky artwork. Deluxe rooms provide plenty of space.

Choose between rooms with views of the river, Big Ben or the London Eye—each available on booking.

bathroom

Antique style vanities and London map wallpaper add style and sense of place to the contemporary bathrooms.

lobby

In a space that could be mistaken for the lobby of a luxury hotel way beyond the price point of the London Marriott County Hall, the dazzling architecture of the original County Hall building makes its play. Expect sky high corniced ceilings, pendulous lights, antique wingback chairs and parquet floors.

pool

A gorgeous palm-lined indoor pool is the ideal place to escape from the busy South Bank crowds.

gym

The hotel has a well-equipped gym with cardio machines, free weights and complimentary classes.

dining

The hotel’s steakhouse revels in the wood panelled walls of the old County Hall, while floor to ceiling windows provide views of Westminster across the river. Guests can also enjoy drinks at the bar.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The hotel serves afternoon tea in the Library. It may not be the most famous of London’s afternoon tea’s but it might have one of the best views to go along with it.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Located right beside Westminster Bridge, the hotel is surrounded by the landmarks of Westminster and the South Bank. Prime for exploring on foot, you can cross the river by bridge or stay on the south side and make your way down the river to the South Bank Centre’s array of cultural institutions. Waterloo Station has national connections ideal for daytrips away from the city, as well as a Tube Station that offers quick, convenient access into the West End.

Restaurants

There is a dearth of good restaurants in this tourist heavy area so make towards Waterloo where options tend to get better and brighter. Eat great tapas in the simple Spanish restaurant Mar I terra (18-minute walk), or visit the great Anchor and Hope (14-minute walk), one of the area’s original and best gastro pubs.

Bars

Drink cocktails in the amazingly kitsch Scooter Café (6-minute walk) where you can pay some attention to the local house cat. For a night out, try cocktails and jazz at the Archduke (7-minute walk).

WHY WE LIKE IT

Aside for the obvious enviable location and the stunning views from the restaurant and rooms, the London Marriott County Hall can call on the appeal of its indoor pool and gorgeous architecture to seal the deal with guests. We love the grand, regal nature of the public spaces and the contemporary décor of the rooms that make the hotel feel more luxurious than you might expect.
