Fodor's Expert Review Copenhagen Marriott Hotel

Kalvebod Brygge 5, Centrum, Copenhagen, Capital Region, 1560, Denmark, Copenhagen, Denmark See on Map

This large Marriott on the waterfront is a well-oiled machine, albeit in a part of town that in the past didn't feel quite so slick. However, recent developments on the canalside, like the wooden Kalvebod Bølge walkway, have brightened things up, and it's a pleasant spot in summer. The hotel doesn't have much of a Danish flavor apart from the great views, but the floor-to-ceiling windows and superior business and conference facilities, plus good fitness facilities with separate sauna and steam rooms for men and women, keep up the Marriott's international standards. Rooms are large and comfortable.

The rooms are some of the largest in town and play it safe with beige tones and big flatscreen TVs, but the huge windows and views are a cut above the average.

Ask for a corner room facing the water. They have spectacular wraparound windows.

Bathrooms also fall into the cookie-cutter international hotel mould - but then, when it's a quality chain like the Marriott, that's not a huge criticism. There are baths and showers in all of the rooms, the facilities are modern and functional, and there's plenty of space too.

The lobby area in this Marriott is actually pretty beautiful: huge double-height floor to ceiling glass windows look out onto the blue waters of the canal, and in summer the cafe and bar spill out onto the terrace too. Staff are charming and efficient.

There's an executive lounge for those staying in the executive suites and above. There are plenty of other facilities for business people too, including the option of using the hotel's stunning royal suite for product launches.

The fitness room has been newly renovated, and offers the facilities you'd expect from a hotel of this size.

The Midtown Grill restaurant dishes up classic dining in a scenic canalside dining room. There's a menu for children too, and a kids' play area on the way into the restaurant (for those without kids, it's partitioned off and won't disturb other diners!).

YOU SHOULD KNOW The breakfast buffet is comprehensive, although not always included in the room rate.

The spirit bottles in the hotel bar, Pier 5, are displayed on tall glass shelves, backed by the windows overlooking the canal, and the effect raises the normal chain-hotel lobby bar above the average. On bright days, sunlight glints through the coloured bottles onto the drinkers below, and in the summer drinks can be taken outside right to the water.

Getting Around

The hotel is a bit of a walk out of town (admittedly a pleasant one, along the canal). It's close to Copenhagen Central Station for other connections, though, or you could make like a local and rent a bike from the hotel for a reasonable fee.

The trendy meatpacking district offers many delights a short walk or taxi ride away (about 20 minutes on foot, 6 minutes by car), including much-lauded gourmet haunt Gorilla (18-minute walk). Or, further afield, treat yourself to Geranium (15-minute drive), one of the city's culinary big daddies, oddly located in a football stadium.

Warpigs Brewpub (17-minute walk) provides great beer and a hearty atmosphere. Or Cafe Langebro (9-minute walk), across the river in Islands Brygge, is a friendly, casual spot for a drink.

You get what you expect at this Marriott - international quality service and facilities - plus larger than average rooms and absolutely stellar views of the canal. It might not have the most personality but it's certainly reliable.
