Aria Hotel

$$$ | Tržiště 9, Prague, 118 00, Czech Republic
Aria Hotel, Prague, Czech Republic
Peter Guttman/Peterguttman.com

This charming music-themed property kicked off Prague's luxury hotel boom in the early 2000s and still holds up well against the competition. While the music theme may be more of a gimmick than an amenity, that's forgivable considering that the hotel hosts live concerts and even has an on-site music librarian. Rooms are sleek and decorated in sandy tones with red and pink punctuations, flat-screen TVs, and spacious, well-lit bathrooms. Another attraction is the rooftop restaurant and bar, with drop-dead gorgeous views of Prague. Although it's at the base of the street leading to the American embassy, there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby.

Pros

  • Set in gorgeous gardens
  • Excellent restaurant and breakfast
  • IPads in all the rooms, along with killer sound systems

Cons

  • Proximity to the embassy can lead to tiresome security checks
  • Some of the suites are small and might be better labeled as standard rooms
  • Slightly standard-issue furniture in otherwise personality-filled hotel

Hotel Neruda

$$ | Nerudova 44, Prague, 118 00, Czech Republic

Built in 1348, this landmark—now a flashy boutique hotel with major design chops—is where the author Jan Neruda and his mother lived in 1860. As a tribute, lines from Neruda's Povídky malostranské (Malá Strana Stories) are painted in the stone hallways. The building supposedly has a ghost—you might hear her jingling keys in the hallway. Designed with the help of local architect Bořek Šipek, the rooms are all interesting and bright in decor terms, but try to see a couple before choosing, as some toward the back of the hotel look out onto a wall.

Pros

  • Designer rooms have lots of character, including bathubs enclosed in glass and splashes of color
  • Buffet breakfast included with local touches
  • Comfortable beds and pillows

Cons

  • Design can impinge on the livability of the hotel
  • No nearby Metro and an uphill walk from the nearest tram stop
  • Rooms can get hot

Pod Věží

$$ | Mostecká 58/2, Prague, 118 00, Czech Republic

The family-friendly Pod Věží is perched on the end of the famous Charles Bridge, so close you even get a free ticket to the tower if you stay here. Accordingly, it can be loud and busy, but the staff works hard to make it feel homey, offering upgrades where possible and going out of their way to help guests with transport, tours, and restaurant recommendations. Rooms are large and pleasant, with blue or silver silk throws and cushions over the cotton sheets. Free, fast Wi-Fi included.

Pros

  • Nice touches like daily gifts for guests
  • Couldn't be closer to one of Prague's main attractions
  • Large rooms

Cons

  • Can be loud
  • Hectic location with constant stream of tourists outside the door
  • Some of the beautiful beam rooms are accessible only by staircase

Sax Vintage Design Hotel

$ | Jánský vršek 3, Prague, 118 00, Czech Republic

This bold, bright, and affordable hotel was favored by former secretary of state Madeleine Albright (there's a framed letter of thanks on the wall). It's an imaginative blast of fresh air amid the cookie-cutter style of some international hotels. The interior design is an explosion, and celebration, of all things excellent during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s—and everything, from the lamps to the barstools, is original. Rooms keep the cheerfully retro vibes going.

Pros

  • Daily happy hour with free wine, beer, and homemade pastries
  • Located on a quiet street
  • Unique and lively decor

Cons

  • Design might be too much for those with more conservative tastes
  • Not convenient to Prague nightlife
  • Some noise in rooms near communal areas
