Fodor's Expert Review Art Nouveau Palace Hotel Prague
Panská 12, Prague, Praha 111 21, Czech Republic See on Map
Perched on a busy corner in the city center, this pistachio-green art nouveau building trumpets its Victorian origins. There's a bit of a sense of faded grandeur which the owners have, sensibly, adjusted the prices to reflect. A block from Wenceslas Square and adjacent to the shopping bonanza of Na Příkopě, the advantage here is location, which puts it ahead of other hotels in its class.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The hotel is popular with tour groups, which has pros and cons: there's often a pleasantly buzzy atmosphere, but single guests and couples can feel a bit overwhelmed.
room
Rooms add to the ice-cream parlor color scheme with icy white marble bathrooms, pale yellow walls, and red velvet beds, some with canopies. The windows are triple-glazed, and connecting rooms are available on request.
Guests have included Henry Kissinger, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Whoopi Goldberg and Pele.
bathroom
The speckled marble bathrooms continue the opulent turn-of-the-century theme, and offer baths (also marble) or showers.
lobby
The hotel's lobby is as fancy as they come, with an old-world feel: dark wood panels, ostenatious statues, chandeliers, and red carpet runners.
dining
The hotel's dining offer is similarly old-school luxe: think saddle of venison and well-constructed cream sauces. Guests can choose between the simpler Cafe Palace, with gallery windows to the outside world, or the opulent L'Epoque restaurant, all vaulted ceilings and drapes.
drinking
Drinks are available in the hotel's cafe or lobby areas.
LOCATION
Getting Around
The hotel is within walking distance of the greatest hits of both Old Town and New Town. For beautiful Mala Strana (the so-called 'Lesser Quarter') and the castle, it's a 25-minute stroll, or 14 minutes by metro from Můstek.
Restaurants
A branch of the popular and reliable Pilsner Urquell pub chain, Kolkovna Savarin (4-minute walk) is nearby. Or Kogo (5-minute walk), in the Slovanský dům shopping center, offers quality Italian fare.
WHY WE LIKE IT
There's a real sense of 20th-century history at the Art Nouveau Palace Hotel Prague, which is unsurprising given its lovely art nouveau exterior and background of hosting celebrities since its opening in 1909. That historical feel does mean the hotel decor and dining can seem a little old-fashioned, but for these prices in this area, that is not a major stumbling block - and it is still a comfortable choice.
