Car Travel

Prices vary, and you will probably pay less if you rent from a local company that's not part of an international chain; it's best to shop around. You can find economy cars (e.g., Seat Ibiza or Volkswagen Polo) from 350 Kn per day, compact cars (e.g., Volkswagen Golf or Hyundai) from 450 Kn per day, intermediate cars (e.g., Skoda Octavia) from 720 Kn per day, or standard cars (e.g., Audi A4) from 850 Kn per day. If you can't drive a stick shift, beware: automatic transmission is rarely available on smaller cars. These prices include unlimited mileage, CDW (collision damage waiver) and TP (theft protection), but not PAI (personal accident insurance). If you drive one-way (say, from Zagreb to Dubrovnik), there is an additional drop-off charge, but it depends on the type of car and the number of days you are renting. While staying in the capital you are better off without a car, but if you wish to visit the nearby hills of Zagorje, or go farther afield to the Međimurje region, a vehicle is helpful unless you want to take a bus to a different attraction each day.
