Fodor's Review

High on a hill, the palace affords a grand view over the harbor from all the front windows, from its gardens, and from the approach. Built in 1893 by Alajos Hauszmann, who also worked on Budapest's castle and Palace of Justice for the then-governor of Hungary, the building itself is no eyesore either. The large columned facade communicates the self-confidence of the robust Habsburg empire, as do the numerous statues placed throughout its grounds. The Maritime & Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral, which investigates the Kvarner's seafaring traditions and the region's cultural heritage from both the Mediterranean and Central Europe, is housed here. You can also admire the rest of the interior while viewing a temporary exhibition in the atrium or attending a meeting or concert in the impressive Marble Hall.
