Where to Stay

This stylish boutique hotel is more than charming. It’s rooms are spacious and modern, the windows are floor-to-ceiling and the entire property is located on the edge of a beautiful private park. You can get lost among the bamboo, lavender and cherry trees or look over it all from the breakfast terrace that serves bottomless champagne. And it’s all roughly a 20-minute walk from the city center.
If unmitigated luxury is what you’re after, no Zagreb hotel fits the bill better than the Esplande. Right by the train station, it was built in 1925 for passengers on the storied Orient Express. Louis Armstrong, Elizabeth Taylor, Charles Lindbergh, Orson Welles, Woody Allen, Queen Elizabeth II, and Richard Nixon all stayed here. Today, a new generation of posh guests populate the Hapsburg-era lobby, resplendent chandeliers, marble bathrooms and champagne on check-in.
If you do see the coast, we recommend the city of Rovinj and the Hotel Adriatic. The epitome of European glamour, its modern, artsy and as cosmopolitan further West. Plus, it has great views of the harbor and Old Town square.
