128 Sint-Pietersniuewstraat, Gent, B9000, Belgium
This brilliantly designed hostel makes remarkably inventive use of the Art Deco–style building in which it resides. Once the office of socialist newspaper Voorhuit (the arts venue of the same name is located just across the street), this heritage building is a wonderful setting for Backstay's pod-style dormitories. Every room is named after a famous newspaper (albeit some not as left-wing as might be expected). There is a cinema in the cellar, music in the bar, and a self-styled "blog room" on the top floor (complete with typewriter for technophobes). Much of its interior is officially protected, from the wooden floors to the stained-glass windows, yet inside the owners have carved out an incredibly unique and likeable space.
