Fodor's Review

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

This fascinating ethnographic museum explores the art, myths, and rites of the native peoples of Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the South Seas. André Malraux described some of its thousands of masks, tools, weapons, sculptures, and other objects in his work La Musée Imaginaire, a compilation of the world's most important art and artifacts. Look for such rare pieces as a Wayard Aparai dance costume worn during a boy's initiation ceremony. A detailed pilgrimage painting on cloth entitled Lhasa and surrounding is one of only two such paintings known in the world. Ask to borrow the free English-language museum guidebook.
