Fodor's Expert Review Freud Haus
Not far from the historic Hofburg district, the marvels and pains of the 20th century come into focus at the Freud House museum. Sigmund Freud's residence from 1891 to 1938, this apartment has five rooms of memorabilia. It's mostly a photographic record of Freud's life, with some documents, publications, and a portion of his collection of antiquities also on display. The waiting-room furniture is authentic, but the consulting room and study furniture (including the famous couch) can be seen only in photographs. Chilling is the collection of telegrams (photocopies of the originals) from the State Department, which chronicle frantic efforts to help the Freud family escape Austria after the Nazi Anschluss in 1938. The apartment is one flight up, which is well marked with signs.
