Fodor's Expert Review Gal Apartments Vienna
Grosse Mohrengasse 29, Vienna, Vienna, A-1020, Austria See on Map
This aparthotel is a popular option for visitors who prefer a homelike feel during their stay, something a straight-up hotel just can't offer. Located in a 150 year-old stately building, the look and feel of the accommodations are exactly what you would expect to find in the home of a Viennese.
The spacious apartments -- with lofty, high ceilings and traditional parquet floors -- have fully equipped kitchens. They are conveniently located in Leopoldstadt, Vienna's trendy 2nd District, and are within walking distance of the city center. For short- and long-term rentals, this lodging is perfect for families, as well as business travelers. Larger units have their own washing machines.
room
Apartments come in 8 sizes, ranging from cozy studios to 860-square foot, three-bedroom apartments. Kitchens include a plethora of provisions, including shopping baskets to be used at the nearby grocers and markets.
YOU SHOULD KNOW There are stovetop burners, but don't expect more than a microwave for cooking.
bathroom
While the smaller studios only have showers, the larger units have baths as well, making them ideal for families with young children.
lobby
This is a typical Vienna apartment building -- no concierge or doorman -- so there is no formal lobby.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Reception is closed midday Saturday til midday Monday. There is a self-service safe, through which you can access your keys.
dining
A benefit to staying at an aparthotel is a kitchen, in which you can create your own masterpiece meals.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Stores are closed on Sundays, so buy your groceries ahead of time.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Parking might be a tad easier here than in the Inner Stadt, but only just. Your best bet is public transportation. The closest U-Bahn stations are Taborstrasse and Nestroyplatz, each a five minute walk. In fair weather, public bike rental is an option for a nominal fee and drop-off locations abound throughout the city.
Restaurants
There are plenty of great eateries just steps outside the door. El Hans serves some of the city's best Spanish cuisine, while the über relaxed Cafe Tachles, smack in the middle of the Karmeliterplatz, boasts a surprising variety of international fare.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The local feel gives a depth to the experience that you miss in a hotel. The neighborhood is easy and accessible, and close to the famed Prater (watch Orson Welles' "The Third Man" before you go.)
