Am Stephansplatz

Stephansplatz 9, Vienna, Vienna, A-1010, Austria, Vienna, Austria

Why We Like It

It is located at the center of the soul of the city, yet the lodging's simplicity offers a calm balance to the throbbing square. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the views from the top balconies are unrivaled.

Overhauled a few years ago, the Am Stephansplatz is an oasis of calm in the middle of the busiest square in Austria. It's rather bland facade is in homage to the majesty of the Gothic St. Stephen's Cathedral, which sits directly across from it.

For nearly 1,000 years, Stephansplatz is has been a thriving square filled with people. Request a room on a higher floor to get a quieter space.

The rooms are designed to be tranquil, which can offset the bustling vibe on the square below. All have light, hardwood floors, and warm, buttery or beige walls. Furnishings are elegantly simple and contemporary. Some rooms have views directly onto the Cathedral, which is so close you feel like you can reach out and touch it. Suites on higher floors include a terrace with a spectacular Cathedral view. The windows are triple-glazed to keep out the noise. There is a coffee and tea maker in eavery room, and all are air-conditioned, not always the case in this Old World city.

Guests will appreciate the heated floors and fair-trade toiletries. Slippers and bathrobes are waiting for you.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Not every bathroom has a tub.

Cheerful colors of yellow and blue make this truly a bright space. There are sitting areas with sofas and chairs, which gives it the feel of a living room.

There is a small workout area, sauna and chaise longues to relax on. No frills, but a good way to unwind after seeing the sites.

Continental breakfast is served in the ground floor cafe, and offers light snacks throughout the day for guests who come back to the hotel for a break.

Getting Around

You are quite literally within walking distance of major sites. For places farther afield, the Stephansplatz Ubahn stations is steps from the front door.

Haas & Haas (1-minute walk) is probably the most beloved and most authentic teahouse in the city. Right on the Stephansplatz, it also has a surprisingly extensive menu. There is a quiet courtyard for dining in warm weather. Head back to the Blue Mustard for some excellent fare (the eatery has already earned a Michelin star). For traditional fare in a traditional, charming setting, go to Zum Weissen Rauchfangkehrer (3-minute walk). "The White Chimney Sweeps has a clientele of both curious tourists and devoted locals.

Onyx (1-minute walk) is just across the square, where you can sip a cocktail and enjoy the other side of the Cathedral. Blue Mustard (3-minute walk) is the new kid in town and making a big splash--trendy setting and great cocktails. Head to the Lamee Rooftop (2-minute walk) for a great vibe and more wonderful views.
