Fodor's Expert Review Pannonia Hotel

Várkerület 75, Sopron, Gyor-Moson-Sopron, 9400, Hungary

This elegant, antique-filled hotel has a long and illustrious past, starting in the 17th century as the Golden Hind, when it welcomed stagecoaches traveling between Vienna and Budapest. Rebuilt in the neoclassical style in 1893, the current building is rich in soaring ceilings, marble floors, dripping chandeliers, and one of the city's more beautiful breakfast rooms. The rooftop terrace—or, rather, terraces, as it is in half a dozen sections—offers spectacular views of the city's countless church spires. Standard rooms are comfortable and smart, but the handsome suites are on a whole other level, with huge wooden beds, antique furniture, and lots more space. As well as a wellness area with a pool, jacuzzi, steam room, and various saunas, there's also an on-site cosmetic surgery and dentist.

  • big rooftop terraces with views

CONS
