Fodor's Expert Review Weisses Rössl
Markt 74, St. Wolfgang, Upper Austria, A-5360, Austria
Family-owned since the 1800s, the "White Horse" guest rooms and apartments, in nine connected houses, are full of the country charm, flowered fabrics, and quaint furniture brought to the big screen in the movie version of the idyllic Austrian operetta of the same name. Many rooms have balconies with a lake view. Bathrooms are luxurious, complete with individual temperature controls. The outdoor pool, directly on the lake, is heated to a constant 86°F year-round, and you can relax with a massage in the spa. The floating dining terraces are enchanting, and a great place to enjoy the noted leek cream soup with scampi, Forelle Müllerin ("Miller's Daughter," a trout fried in butter), or corn-fed chicken in a rosemary gravy. The hotel is world-famous, so book well in advance, especially for the summer.
