Fodor's Expert Review Tennerhof
Griesenauweg 26, Kitzbühel, Tirol, A-6370, Austria Fodor's Choice
Adored by the rich and famous, from the Duke of Windsor to Kirk Douglas, this Alpine Shangri-la, in a huge park-like garden, is at once rustic and glamorous, with gold chandeliers hung over country cupboards and silk-covered sofas next to shuttered windows. The 400-year-old former farmhouse has the feel of a country mansion-cum hunting lodge—you might even sleep in the hand-painted bed of the original owner. The bedrooms are all different, some with ceramic stoves or even open fireplaces. Take the Franz Josef suite for fabulous views of the Wilder Kaiser mountains. The public rooms are cozy and inviting and the spa has an indoor and outdoor pool. Breakfast and gourmet dinners are served either on the terrace or in the atmospheric parlors. If you wish, you can milk the hotel's own cows for your breakfast milk.
PROS
- aristocratic flair
- great breakfast
- nice garden
CONS
- a little way from the town center and the ski-lifts, but there's a hotel shuttle
