Fodor's Review

From miles away you can see Burg Hohenwerfen, one of the most formidable fortresses of Europe (it was never taken in battle), which dates from 1077. Though fires, reconstructions, and renovations have altered the appearance of the imposing fortress, it still maintains its medieval grandeur. Hewn out of the rock on which it stands, the castle was called by Maximilian I a "plume of heraldry radiant against the sky". Inside, it has black-timber-beamed state rooms and an enormous frescoed Knights' Hall. It even has a torture chamber. Eagles, falcons, and other birds of prey swoop dramatically above the castle grounds, adding considerably to the medieval feel. In a varied history, it has been used as a prison and a police training center. Now the castle harbors Austria's first museum of falconry, and the birds of prey are rigorously trained. Special shows with music, falconry, and performers in period costume are held at least twice a month; call ahead for dates and times.
