Fodor's Expert Review Ginger Lily

Reduit Beach Ave., Rodney Bay, Gros Islet, St. Lucia See on Map

Jane Zarem

Ginger Lily is in the midst of the Rodney Bay Village scene and right across the street from Reduit Beach. This small hotel is a good place to hang your hat if you don't need or want the amenities of a big resort but still want to be extremely close to virtually everything—the beach, dining options, shopping, nightlife. For anything else—such as diving, horseback riding, or tours—the management will gladly make arrangements.

The hotel has no on-site activities geared to kids other than the pool. With the beach and water park just across the street, though, that may be enough.

room

All 9 rooms and 2 suites rooms are large, with tile floors and furnishings in a (rather dated) tropical motif. Each has a queen-size bed and a sitting area with a sofa bed; the two suites each have separate bedroom and full kitchen. Ground-floor rooms have a terrace with chairs and a hammock; upper-level rooms have a balcony with chairs and a hammock.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The room air-conditioners can be unreliable.

bathroom

The bathrooms are relatively large, with tile floors and walls. Vanities have a tiled countertop, single sink, and large mirror on the wall above. Showers, separated by a tiled half-wall, seem big enough for a small crowd!

lobby

You can’t miss this bright yellow hotel topped with a bright red roof. Once inside, there’s a reception area, some seating, and access to the restaurant and bar. A doorway opens to the pool and guestrooms beyond.

pool

A small kidney-shaped pool in the hotel’s courtyard is a welcome place for a refreshing dip. A few chairs are set up in a shady spot at the edge of the pool.

dining

The poolside restaurant serves only a rather unimpressive continental breakfast, which is included in the room rates.

Plan an early lunch!

drinking

Guests can get a drink at the small bar in the restaurant, but someone from reception does the mixing and pouring.

beach

Reduit Beach, a five-mile stretch of golden sand, is right across the street—a 2-minute walk. Splash Island Water Park is just offshore—the slide, swing, trampoline, monkey bars, and more are fun for the whole family but especially the kids. Water-sports equipment, beach chairs, and umbrellas can be rented in front of the Royal St. Lucia by Rex hotel. Sports instruction and scuba diving trips can be arranged there, too.

LOCATION

Getting Around

You can easily walk to the restaurants, bars, and shops in Rodney Bay Village. A rental car is recommended to explore further on your own. Driving is not a problem in the north, as the terrain is fairly flat. To visit the iconic sites in Soufrière, however, a boat tour is the most comfortable way to travel—and the boats depart from Rodney Bay. Taxis are always available.

Restaurants

Rodney Bay Village is restaurant-central. All along Reduit Beach Avenue, from Baywalk Mall to the beach, you’ll find one restaurant after another. For seafood, for example, try Buzz Seafood and Grill (5-minute walk); for French Caribbean dining, try Jacques Waterfront Dining in Harmony Suites Hotel; for barbecue, head for Delirius; and if you have dinner at Ti Bananne at Coco Palm Hotel, you can stick around for the live music.

Bars

Bars and nightspots in Rodney Bay Village are within walking distance, although it’s better to drive or take a taxi late at night. For example, Verve (2-minute drive), a dance club, attracts a fairly young crowd. Or you can try your luck at Treasure Bay Casino (2-minute drive)—St. Lucia’s one and only casino—is at Baywalk Mall.

Don’t miss Gros Islet Jump-Up (5-minute drive), the island's largest street party. It’s a Friday-night ritual. Huge speakers set up on the street blast Caribbean music all night long. You can also buy barbecued fish and chicken from villagers who set up grills along the roadside—along with beer and soda. Take a taxi to Gros Islet. The streets get so crowded that you’re unlikely to find a parking spot for a rental car. Your taxi driver will arrange a pickup time.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Couples, in particular, will find the hotel’s location near the beach, the casual vibe, and proximity to all of the Rodney Bay action—plus the very affordable price—to be very attractive indeed.
