Fodor's Expert Review Gallo Negro
Serving dishes that are difficult to find in San Juan, Gallo Negro operates in a small space reminiscent of a Brooklyn, New York, joint, with exposed brick walls and modern fixtures. Trained at the French Culinary Institute, Chef María Mercedes expertly prepares New American dishes, not tying herself to any particular cuisine. The menu changes frequently, but you will always find signatures such as her Korean BBQ with daikon and kimchi or the "Pato a la 15," duck breast in a ginger and acerola glaze on a bed of mushroom risotto. Other days Vietnamese pho or tonkotsu ramen are served. Besides great food, Gallo Negro is a whiskey bar with more than 60 whiskeys in stock. Enjoy them neat or in a creative cocktail. (The area is not very welcoming at night so opt for a taxi, about a five-minute ride from Condado.) They serve one of the best Sunday brunches in San Juan.
