Fodor's Review

A set of concrete steps sitting mysteriously at the water's edge gives this beach its name. The waves, breaking on a shallow reef, can get huge. On calm days, it's an excellent snorkeling spot and is home to the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. This is also a good place to find sea glass. The beach is hard to find—look for the turnoff at a whale-shaped sign indicating "Playa Escalera." On a handful of days each year, the surf here becomes an epic wave that is one of the world's best, drawing surfers from around the globe. Amenities: none. Best for: snorkeling; sunsets.
