Fodor's Expert Review Casa de Campo

La Romana, La Romana, 22000, Dominican Republic Fodor's Choice

One of the country's oldest and most famous resorts, which set the benchmark for luxury travel in the Caribbean when it was built in the mid-1970s, has had a dramatic renovation of its public spaces, rooms, and suites, bringing it back into the top tier of luxury properties. The striking beauty of the minimalist design and decor utilizes rich woods and open spaces set off by splashes of jewel tones. Rooms and villas are outfitted with fine European linens, large flat-screen TVs, high-tech lighting, and fresh orchids; each comes with a golf cart, though there's also an efficient shuttle system. New restaurants that appeal to modern tastes, and new nightlife options and an annual array of festivals and special events have been added. The pool complex and its popular swim-up bar was also redesigned. The spa, with its private water-treatment section, is a pleasurable place to relax and revive. Although you can book a room, most guests go for the all-inclusive or golf packages. Booking just a room at a much cheaper rate is possible, but most guests go for the inclusive plans or golf packages.

  • excellent golf and tennis
  • fine restaurant choices, even for those with meal plans
  • beautiful, modern design

  • not the largest beach
  • the standard accommodations have not enjoyed the same attention as the higher room categories
  • a bit too sprawling although the golf carts do help
