Fodor's Expert Review Brisas Los Galeones
Chivirico, Santiago de Cuba, 87900, Cuba Fodor's Choice
How many lodgings proudly proclaim that they are "only" a three-star resort and their devoted return customers revel in that claim? A mostly Canadian retiree clientele makes up the guest list here, but all are welcome, of course. Rooms are small and plainly decorated; each comes with a private patio and feels more like a comfortable little cottage than a hotel room. Since the place is small, any overflow gets booked into the neighboring Brisas Sierra Mar, which sometimes happens during the high season if there's not space here. That's not a tragedy, but Los Galeones is more enjoyable than its sister property if you fit the demographic. While there's often a certain blandness to the state-run Cuban hotels, Los Galeones illustrates that it doesn't have to be that way.
PROS
- the place is wonderfully low-key and friendly
- rooms have great views
CONS
- it's a steep walk (296 steps) down to the beach
- this is not where the action is
