Fodor's Expert Review National Heroes Square

Bridgetown Memorial/Monument/Tomb

Across Broad Street from Parliament and bordered by High and Trafalgar streets, this triangular plaza marks the center of town. Its monument to Lord Horatio Nelson, who visited Barbados only briefly in 1777 as a 19-year-old navy lieutenant, predates Nelson's Column in London's Trafalgar Square by 30 years (1813 vs. 1843). There's also a war memorial and a fountain commemorating the advent of running water on Barbados in 1865.
