Fodor's Expert Review Almond Beach Village

Hwy. 1B, Heywoods, St. Peter, Barbados

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Barbados's premier family resort is massive enough to be a popular conference venue and romantic enough to host intimate weddings. Situated on an 18th-century sugar plantation north of Speightstown, the Village's 32 acres front a mile-long, powdery beach. Rooms and pools at the north end of the property, near a historic sugar mill, are reserved for adults; at the south end, junior and one-bedroom suites targeted to families with children are close to special facilities for kids and teens. A plethora of activities—golf (on the resort's 9-hole executive course), sailing, waterskiing, shopping excursions to Bridgetown, an off-site Bajan picnic, and more—are all included. Not enough? Hop on the shuttle to Almond Beach Club farther south and enjoy the (adults-only) facilities there—or venture to the south coast and spend the day at Almond Casuarina.

PROS

  • family resort with adult-only areas
  • lots to do and all included, including Bajan cooking lessons
  • sugar mill is a popular wedding venue

CONS

  • it's huge
  • more emphasis could be placed on service and room renovations
