Spirit House

Devil's Point, Cat Island, Bahamas

Three miles west of Devils Point, sitting on a 70-foot height and next to a stunning beach cove, Spirit House is an exotic and idyllic private house for rent for 8 or 10 people at $5,000/week. Designed by Parisian designer Stella Vajsova-Jones, it is owned by a friendly Bahamian musician, Andrew Jones. The five-bed house has a dining and living space and full kitchen, 300-gallon aquarium, spacious wraparound verandas, and three large decks. Spirit House is off the main grid and powered by solar, wind, and a backup generator. It’s superbly equipped inside and out: Sub-Zero refrigerator, freezer, washing machine, and beverage cooler; hot-water tub; snorkeling equipment; two paddleboards; and a 20-foot Mako speedboat for bonefishing, diving, and exploring. The gardens abound with flowering and native fruit trees. You can self-cater (bring lots of food in a cooler or two) or call in Freeda Major who will cook her way into your heart. It’s $25 per person for four-course meals or $12 for take-away plates from her restaurant down the road. You can call in housekeeping or do it yourself. For deep chilling in a beachy, watery paradise, it’s hard to find a better place.
