Fodor's Expert Review Hawksbill by Rex Resorts

Grays Farm Main Rd., Five Islands Village, St. John, Antigua and Barbuda

"Location, location, location" is the hospitality industry mantra, and four secluded beaches (including one clothing-optional strand) compose this resort's main attraction. Verdant grounds with landscaped walkways, plantation-style cottages trimmed with gingerbread fretwork and radiant bougainvillea, and a backdrop of jade mountains maximize Hawksbill's old-time Caribbean feel. Garden-view rooms enjoy restricted water views, making them the best buy; the original air-conditioned Club units (especially numbers 138–142) are isolated from the action, but handpainted tile work, beamed vaulted ceilings, and superlative vistas make them the choice accommodations—other than the restored, three-bedroom great house. Though a full slate of entertainment is on tap, the mix of honeymooners and mature couples is generally sedate, thanks to the restful surroundings. Unfortunately, it has slowly slid downhill since Rex took over, but a 2015 renovation and affordable package deals make it worthwhile for those seeking a secluded strand—or four.
