Train Travel

Metlink operates trains connecting the Wellington Railway Station with the Hutt Valley and Masterton. If you're a fan of scenic train trips, try the Northern Explorer; linking Wellington and Auckland, it stops in Paraparaumu, Palmerston North, Ohakune, National Park, Otorohanga (near Waitomo), Hamilton, and Papakura. The train travels southbound on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday and northbound on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday.
