Fodor's Expert Review Government Buildings Historic Reserve
The second-largest wooden structure in the world is now home to Victoria University's law faculty. After the earthquakes of 1848 and 1855, it was found that wooden buildings suffered less damage than brick. This one was constructed in 1876 and designed to look like stone, though it was actually fashioned entirely from kauri timber. Inside are historic exhibits about the building and an information center, but it's the exterior that most captivates.
