Fodor's Expert Review Stationhouse Café
You can come to beautiful Lake Brunner on a day drive from Greymouth, as part of a round-the-lake trip, or stop off the TranzAlpine train for lunch while it hops out to the coast and back—about a three-hour stop. The café is in an old railway house, perched on a terrace above the railway station, with a superb view across Lake Brunner and the kahikatea forests and wetlands beyond. Lunch options include chowders, salads, homemade pies with mashed potatoes and peas (like the old days), blue cod, and chips. The dinner menu features salmon, lamb Wellington, rib-eye steak, and venison, all served with generous fresh vegetables or salad.
