Swing by for a quintessential slice of Golden Bay life, music, and craft beer. Locals come for the live music (usually several evenings a week and more in summer, starting around 8:30 pm), a bowl of mussel chowder, some fresh, steamed mussels, or local Anatoki salmon, washed down with some house-brewed beer. While new brews are always on the go, a perennial favorite is the famous Captain Cooker manuka beer—originally made from the native manuka tree by Captain Cook in the 1700s to combat scurvy on his ships. The plentiful options other than seafood are simple, tasty, and wholesome good. The design is wool-shed chic, self-described as "Kiwi woolshed meets Aussie farmhouse," which seems an apt description. Rough sawn timbers, handmade furniture, an outdoor fire pit, and leafy trees complete the rustic look. All the beers and ciders are made on-site.
