Fodor's Expert Review Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge
Mokihinui Rd., Karamea, West Coast, 7891, New Zealand
Just a few miles inland up the Mokihinui River from the highway, this wooden lodge occupies a stunning spot on a bend in the river, surrounded by virgin forest and towering gorge walls. Sit on the deck and listen to the rumble of the water as it slices over the rocky riverbed. Walk across the wooden bridge to the river and take a cool dip in the deep pool on the far side. The rooms sleep four, with a studio bedroom downstairs and a loft room upstairs. There's a small restaurant, and a meal package (breakfast and two-course dinner) is extra. The lodge located right at the northern terminus of the Old Ghost Road, a remote multiday trail for advanced mountainbikers and hikers.
